Chapter One // Chapter Two // Chapter Three // Chapter Four // Chapter Five

“We were about to leave without you,” Worm joked, watching them. He’s been keeping on eye of the relationship since Gerard’s ‘accident’.

“We haven’t been gone that long,” said Ray, stopping by the door.

“We’re on a tight schedule boys, you know that.” Worm looks over at Gerard, concern written across his face. He drops the cigarette on the floor, putting it out with his foot.

“Sorry,” Gerard replied, looking down and unconsciously wiping his mouth.

Ray turns to him, tipping his face and stroking it. “Go and talk to Frank. Find out what’s wrong. I’ll come up in a minute.”

Gerard nods and heads inside. Ray smiles and slaps his ass as Gerard climbs onto the bus. Worm raises an eyebrow as Ray turns back to him.

“Can I bum a cigarette before we go?” Ray asks, smiling at Worm, daring him to say something.

Worm offers up the packet of cigarettes. “Sure.”

Worm observes Ray as he lights up, leaning against the bus, looking a little too much like the cat that got the cream. He says nothing and just watches as Ray takes a drag of it, smoke curling from his lips.

“Five minutes, Ray. We have a long trip ahead of us tonight.” Worm turns and leaves, more worried now for Gerard than before.

Ray smiles as Worm walks away. Sooner or later, he and Gerard are going to get caught. Now that Gerard’s started to submit to him without much argument, he thinks now is the time for the idea of them together to start to get around the crew.

-------------------------------------

A quick walk around the bus tells him that Frank’s not downstairs, so he makes his way up the stairs to the bunks.

“Frank?” he calls softly up the stairs, getting no reply. Turning the corner, he can see that Frank is curled up in his bunk.

“Frank? What’s wrong?” Gerard asks.

“Fuck off, Gerard.” The reply is immediate and angry.

“What happened, Frank?” Gerard tries again, confused by the reaction he’s getting from his best friend. He steps towards the bunk, reaching out to touch his friend.

Frank stays curled up, not answering him. Right now, he hates Gerard and he knows if he talks, he’ll say something he’ll regret. So he just lies there listening, fists clenched, praying that Gerard will go away and leave him alone.

“Frank, please?” Gerard feels hurt by Frank’s reaction, he doesn’t know why Frank’s acting like this. He needs Frank. Frank’s smile makes everything okay.

As soon as his hand touches Frank’s shoulder, he shakes Gerard’s hand away.

“Leave me the fuck alone!” Frank bites his tongue, wanting to call his former best friend every vile name under the sun.

Gerard steps back shocked by the reaction he’s getting, tears beginning to well in his eyes. He can’t do this without Frank.

“Frank?” Gerard’s voice comes out in a whimper. “Please.” Gerard knows he’s begging but he doesn’t care. There’s silence, Frank refuses to reply.

“What did I do?” he asks, his strength failing him as he sinks to the floor. He sits there watching Frank’s back, willing him to say something.

“I need you.” Gerard’s voice cracks as he tries to hold back the tears.

The bitter laugh from the bunk cuts deep into Gerard’s heart.

“You two faced, lying son of a bitch. Why don’t you just fuck off to him.” The words spill out of Frank’s mouth before he can stop them.

“Please, Frank, what did I do?” Gerard asks, not really expecting a reply. He doesn’t get one. Gerard curls up, sobbing. He does need Frank.

“Frank,” his voice comes out in a whisper, “Ray’s.”

He doesn’t get chance to finish his sentence as Ray comes up the stairs. Gerard stares at Ray before the despair washes over him, his chance to tell someone snatched from his grasp.

Ray comes over, wrapping his arms around Gerard and rocking him gently.

“Shhh, it’s alright.” Ray kisses Gerard’s hair and glances up into the bunk at Frank’s back.

“He doesn’t deserve this,” Ray says, helping Gerard up off the floor. “Whatever your fucking problem is, deal with it.”

Both Ray and Gerard jump as Frank slams his fist into the side of the bus. Ray walks Gerard downstairs and away from Frank. At the bottom of the stairs, he glances around, checking that the others are still in the lounge and kisses Gerard’s tears stained face.

“I love you, just remember that.”

Gerard nods and let’s himself be led into to the kitchen.

-------------------------------------

Frank listens to them as they walk down the stairs, cursing under his breath at the pain in his hand. He flexes it, making sure he hasn’t done any serious damage. Ray’s voice floats up the stairs.

“I love you, just remember that.”

Frank buries his face in the pillow.

“Fuck it, fuck it, fuck IT!” Frank swears into the pillow.

Frank sits up, swinging his legs off the bed. He sits there, rubbing his temples and just breathing. Gerard’s a stubborn son of a bitch sometimes and it makes him so mad. Frank knows there’s something wrong with Gerard. They all know he was attacked even if he won’t talk about it. Frank just wishes Gee would talk to him. He’s letting his worry become anger over something as stupid as Gerard falling in love with someone Frank doesn’t approve of. He should be happy for them and he knows it, but Ray just creeps him out. Always has. Now he owes Gerard an apology. He hates apologizing. Frank sighs and swings his legs back onto his bunk. He lays back down, deciding that if Gerard comes back before he falls asleep he’ll say sorry.

-------------------------------------

“Oh Gee,” Mikey walks over from the kitchen to hug his clearly upset brother. Gerard wraps his arms around Mikey, burying his head into his brother’s chest.

“He hates me,” Gerard mumbles, breathing hard trying not to cry again.

“Oh. I’m sure he doesn’t,” Mikey says, stroking his brother’s hair. He looks up at Ray, trying to ask what happened with his eyes.

Ray shakes his head. “All I heard was him telling Gerard to fuck off.”

“I’m sure he’s just having his period or something,” Mikey says, attempting to make a bad joke.

“No one could hate you Gerard, you’re adorable,” Ray says, moving forwards and resting his hand on Gerard’s shoulder.

“Wanna sit down?” Mikey asks. Gerard nods, wiping his face. “I’ll make coffee, you go and sit with Ray, okay?”

Gerard doesn’t move. He just wanted to be held by his brother for a while.

“Come on Gerard, Mikey needs to breathe at some point,” Ray said, slipping his hand in Gerard’s and pulling him away from Mikey. He follows Ray to the small table and sits down as Ray slides in beside him.

Gerard sits, biting his nails as Mikey makes the coffee.

“Do I smell coffee?” Bob asks as he walks in from the lounge.

“I’m making enough for all of us,” Mikey says as Bob sits down opposite Gerard.

“He’s still not talking huh?” Bob says, nodding in the general direction of the bunks.

Gerard shakes his head as he feels Ray put his hand on his knee.

“I’m sure he’ll be more talkative in the morning. You know Frank. He’s temperamental but he gets over it quickly,” says Bob.

“Yeah,” Gerard smiles half heartedly. “I just don’t know what I did to make him so mad.”

“I’m sure you didn’t do anything,” Bob says, trying to reassure Gerard. “Just his time of the month.”

Mikey laughs in the kitchen, “I said that.”

Gerard smiles at them both. Ray squeezes his legs and Gerard looks at him and smiles.

“And tomorrow,” says Ray. “We all get to sleep in hotel beds.”

“Oh fuck yes,” Bob lets out a sigh of relief. “ I need a good nights sleep. Shotgun.”

“What? No fair!” Mikey protests as he brings in the coffee, setting the tray on the table. “It’s supposed to be my turn in the single room.”

“Should have called shotgun then.” Bob smirks.

Mikey punches him in the arm. He knows Bob will give him the room because Bob’s really just a softie inside.

“Oh, you want to wrestle for it?” Bob says, standing up.

“No!” Mikey giggles, backing up as Bob reaches out to tickle him. Mikey wriggles in his arms laughing. “Lemme go!”

Gerard laughs watching them. Mikey squeals, wriggling out of Bob’s grasp and runs for the lounge door. Ray hands Gerard his cup of coffee as Bob gets a second grip on Mikey. The younger Way drops to the floor, laughing too hard to stand. Bob sits on top of him, tickling him mercilessly.

Gerard takes a long drink of his coffee, watching his brother crying with laughter and smiles. Moments like this make his life worth living.
